Bridges and set up

Bridge, strings and bow are for a very large part responsible for the sound and playing comfort of a bowed instrument. A bridge works like an equaliser: it filters certain frequencies and reinforces others. The bridge is vital to tonecolour, dynamics and playing comfort. This playing comfort is first of all a question of height and curvature of course. Comfort for the left hand: distance strings to fingerboard and comfort for the bowing hand: the right curve and distances between strings. But playing comfort is much more. It also means the responsiveness of the strings, the "pâte" a musician feels under the bow, the bandwidth of dynamics and a range of other possibilities of expression.
There is a  relation between belly shapes and thicknesses on the one hand and the choice of bridge model, woods and thicknesses on the other. Gesina has studied bridges from historical sources and is aware of the development of bridgemodels through history and regions. She is also involved in a larger research project that studies resonance modes and bridge influences on viols in a modern, mechanical way.

Over the years, Gesina has built up large  experience in sound and comfort improvement by making bridges and doing set ups. In the price a soundpost set up and nut curve check is included.
